The Critical Importance Of Editing For Good Writing

When editing, you need to be your own critic because if you’re not, someone else will be. And this can cause a multitude of problems for you. Do you want your teacher, professor, girlfriend, or the hiring manager at the company where you applied for work to be critiquing your writing? Probably not. But, whoever is reading your writing will be your grammar checker, spelling checker and proofreader – your editor.

Have you ever received a letter or read someone’s writing that was filled with poor grammar and spelling errors? Can you remember the effect it had on you? Didn’t you form a judgment, not only of the writing but also of the person, even if you really liked that person? I bet the answer is yes. And the writing that left such a poor impression on you probably was that way because the author either did not take the time to edit his writing, or tried but didn’t have the know-how.

Everyone should find the time to edit. But if you’re not a natural speller, if grammar is not your comfort zone and if good writing style is not your forte, then what are your options?

Most computer word processors function as a spell checker and grammar checker. These checkers typically perform merely okay. Sadly, there are many writing errors that pass through word processors without correction because they are not sophisticated enough to detect the errors. But a knowledgeable reader will see them immediately.

For example, word processors generally cannot distinguish between words that are spelled correctly but are used incorrectly within the context of the writing. As an example, if you meant to write the sentence, “I will sing at your daughter’s wedding…” but inadvertently you typed, “I will singe at your daughter’s wedding…” most word processors will indicate that something is wrong with the word “singe” in your sentence but won’t indicate what is wrong?

If you’re a good speller, you may pick up the fact that you’re offering to burn around the edges at someone’s wedding. If you’re not a good speller, or if English is not your native language, you may not be clear on how on what’s wrong, or how to fix it.

What you need that will find and correct all of your writing errors is a powerful writing software program that proofreads everything. These programs not only check for spelling, punctuation, grammar and contextual word errors, but also suggest word and phrase changes to enhance your text and make it more proper and finished. And they teach as well, by highlighting every suggested change with explanations. Once you accept the suggestions, you merely make one key strike on your keyboard or click once on your mouse and everything is instantly corrected and finished. Having this software is like having your own professional editor sitting beside you as your master critic to help you produce polished documents that represent you at your best.

Finishing a written document has never been so easy … and so impressive!
